Small feeds want a shallow pan, not a deep pail. An animal that has to push its head down into a bucket to reach the last of a grain feed will tip the bucket, and then the feed is on the ground and you are none the wiser about how much was eaten. A low-sided pan sits flat and lets the animal clean it out. This is the 4.7 L (5 quart) size. Rubber matters more here than almost anywhere else, because feed pans get stepped on constantly. A rubber pan takes a hoof and springs back where a plastic pan splits along the rim and then splits further every time after. It handles grain, minerals, soaked feed and supplements, and the size suits calves, sheep, goats and working dogs. Being heavy for its size, it stays roughly where it is put without needing to be pegged down. Turn it over and knock it out after a wet feed rather than letting the residue set. Rubber releases dried feed easily if you get to it and grudgingly if you leave it a week.
