Not every feed is a scoop and a half. A supplement, a bit of mineral, a small ration for a lamb or a dog, a soaked handful for something that is off its feed. Putting that in a full-size pan means it spreads across the bottom in a thin layer and half of it gets nosed onto the ground. Two quarts is about 1.9 litres, which concentrates a small feed into a depth the animal can actually work at. The rubber body is heavy for its size, so it stays put better than a light plastic dish of the same capacity, and the flexible walls mean a hoof or a boot on the rim deforms it rather than cracking it. Rubber has one property that matters more than any other in this climate. Ice will not split it. A frozen pan turns over and knocks out clean, and you set it back down and refill it rather than fetching a replacement. New rubber feeders often arrive smelling strongly of the material. That fades. Washing it out and leaving it in open air for a week or two speeds it along considerably.
