Ten quarts of water is a manageable carry and a sensible amount to leave in front of one animal. In rubber, the same bucket also survives being tipped, trodden on and frozen solid, which is the sequence that finishes off most hard plastic pails before they see a second winter. It is a plain round bucket at 9.5 L (10 quarts), in flexible rubber rather than moulded polyethylene. There is noticeably more weight to it empty than a plastic pail of the same size, and that weight is what stops it blowing across a paddock or tipping when an animal noses at it. The practical advantage turns up in January. Turn it over, flex the sides, and the ice comes out in one piece. No chipping, no kettle of hot water, no cracked pail waiting for you in the spring. It will pick up a smell if it goes from feed to water without a wash in between. Keep the rubber buckets to one job each and the problem does not come up.
