Watch a group of yearlings with a light feed pan and you will understand why this exists. The pan becomes a toy within a minute of the feed being gone. Dropping it into a discarded tire ends the game, because the whole assembly weighs more than they care to move. The pan holds 15 L (16 US quarts) and is shaped to drop into most 16 to 20 inch tires. It also stands on its own if you are feeding on a barn floor. The plastic is a low-density polyethylene, so it dents and springs back rather than splitting, which is what you want from something that gets stood on. Red is the colour most people can see against dirt, snow and dried grass equally well. If pans wander despite the tire, or if you are feeding at dusk, that visibility is worth more than it sounds. Keep the load reasonable. It is a feed pan, not a block holder, and it is not intended to carry a full-size mineral block. Rinse it when the feed has been wet and let it drain upside down so nothing sours in the bottom.
