Details
There is no cheaper heavy feeder than a pan in a tire. The rubber costs nothing, weighs enough that very little will move it, and the pan lifts out for cleaning. What was always missing was a pan actually moulded for the job rather than one wedged in and hoped for. Capacity is 15 L (16 US quarts, 4 gallons), and the pan is dimensioned to seat inside typical 16 to 20 inch car tires. The low-density polyethylene takes cold without going brittle, which is the failure mode of most rigid pans in an Alberta January. Forest green is the quiet option. In a yard where you would rather not have bright plastic showing from the road, or in a treed paddock, it disappears, bearing in mind that anything which disappears from the road also disappears from you when you are looking for it. Pull the pan out of the tire once in a while and clean under it. That gap is where water, old feed and mice collect, and it is the one part of the setup people never think to check.
