Winter chores happen in the dark at both ends of the day. A yellow pail is the one still visible under a yard light or a headlamp, which sounds like a small thing until you have walked back to the barn twice looking for a pail somebody left in the alley. The pail is the standard round: 7.6 L (8 quarts), 28 cm in diameter and 20 cm deep (11 by 8 inches), moulded from 100 percent recycled low-density polyethylene. The material is chosen for flexibility rather than stiffness, so a full pail dropped on concrete generally bounces instead of splitting. Yellow does show dirt, which is either a drawback or the entire point. A pail you can see is dirty is a pail that gets washed. Dark colours simply hide the film that builds up inside anything used for feed. One habit worth keeping: rinse and invert. Most of the working life of a plastic pail is decided by whether it spends its off hours full of water and ice or dry and upside down.
