Red is the colour people reserve for the thing that must not get mixed up. Whatever the rule is in your barn, the pail that goes to the milk house, the one for the sick pen, the one that never touches feed, a red pail enforces it without a label. Labels on a wet pail do not survive a season anyway. Underneath, it is the same round bucket as the rest of the range: 7.6 L (8 quarts), 28 cm across the top and 20 cm deep (11 by 8 inches), in 100 percent recycled low-density polyethylene. The plastic is deliberately soft so it takes a drop on frozen ground. It is also the easiest colour to find again. A red pail set down in tall grass or left at the far end of a pen turns up eventually. A black one does not, and in due course gets run over. If a coloured pail is doing a specific job, wash it on its own and store it apart from the others. The whole value of the colour evaporates the moment it goes back into the general stack.
