Eight quarts is the size most feed rations actually are. A five-gallon pail is too big to hang and too heavy to carry two of. This holds about 7.6 L, which is one animal's feed and not much more, and you can walk a yard with one in each hand without your shoulders objecting. It measures roughly 28 cm across by 20 cm deep (11 by 8 inches) and is moulded from recycled low-density polyethylene. The material is why these last: it takes a kick, a hoof and a hard freeze without cracking, and there is no rivet or bail to rust out where the handle meets the body. Green is worth reserving for the plain ration if you have more than one bucket in circulation. Buckets this size get used for water, feed, soaking hay and carrying tools, and the only way to keep the feed bucket a feed bucket is to make it recognisable. Rinse it and turn it upside down so nothing sits in the bottom.
