Colour is free organisation. If the green pails are the ones that carry water and nothing else, or the ones that belong to the goats, nobody has to remember anything. They just pick up a green pail. Forest green is dark enough to hide the wear that shows badly on lighter colours. The pail itself is the standard round: 7.6 L (8 quarts), 28 cm across and 20 cm deep (11 by 8 inches), moulded in 100 percent recycled low-density polyethylene. It is a flexible plastic rather than a brittle one, which is what you want for anything living outdoors through an Alberta winter. The proportions are the point of it. At 20 cm deep you can get your arm to the bottom to scrub it properly, and at 8 quarts you can carry two full ones without walking sideways. Deeper pails hold more and are worse at everything else. Store them nested and upside down. A stack left rim-up outside is a stack full of rainwater, and by November that is a stack frozen together.
