Eight quarts is the size people actually reach for. A five-gallon pail is too heavy carried full and too deep to get a hand into the bottom of. This one takes 7.6 L (8 quarts, or 2 gallons), which is a feed for one animal or as much water as anybody wants to carry any distance. It measures 28 cm across the top and 20 cm deep (11 by 8 inches), moulded from 100 percent recycled low-density polyethylene. That is a soft plastic by design. It deforms and springs back where a rigid pail would shatter, which is the entire argument for it at minus thirty. Black is the default and there is no shame in it. It hides stains, it does not fade the way bright colours eventually do, and if you are buying six pails for general use rather than colour-coding a system, black is the sensible way to do it. Knock the ice out rather than chipping it. A good whack on the rim with the pail upside down will usually free a frozen block without damage. Going at frozen polyethylene with a bar is how you find its limit.
