Some coops do not need a lid on the feeder. Under cover, out of the weather, with birds that roost properly on a bar at night, the cover is one more piece to lift and lose. The open-top version drops that and keeps everything else that makes a gravity feeder worth having. The unit is roughly 27 cm (10.6 in) across and 24 cm (9.4 in) tall, holding about 3.2 kg (7 lb). A translucent conical hopper sits in a coloured base pan with radial dividers spaced around the rim, so a bird can reach in at one point and cannot sweep feed sideways out of the pan. It hangs from a wire hook at the top. Open-topped also means filling is quick. Tip the bag in and you are done, with no clips or lids. That is why a lot of people prefer these in a barn where the feeder is under a roof anyway. Hang it at the height of a standing bird's back and adjust as birds grow. Take it down and rinse the pan when feed dust cakes in the dividers, and let it dry before refilling so nothing sets hard in the bottom.
