Chicks cannot reach into a full-size feeder, and a large feeder in a brooder mostly gives them somewhere to sit. This one is sized for the first weeks: about 1.4 kg (3 lb) of crumble in a body low enough that day-olds can feed over the edge. It is the same open pattern as the bigger feeders in the range, scaled down. Several chicks eat at once, and you can read the level without disturbing anything, which counts for a lot in a brooder. Every lid you lift is heat you lose. It is also the right size for a pen of bantams or a quail set-up long after the chicks have grown out, so it does not turn into a once-a-year item taking up shelf space. Keep it up on a block or a shallow platform. Chicks scratch constantly, and a feeder sitting flat on shavings will be half full of bedding by the afternoon.
