Filling a feeder is a two-handed job and you have a full pail in one of them. Anything with a lid to unclip, a jug to unscrew or a base to lift off gets set down in the litter while you sort it out. An open top means you tip the pail in and walk away. Capacity is about 18 lb of feed, near enough 8 kg, which for most small flocks is a few days between fills. Moulded plastic construction, so nothing rusts and nothing goes brittle at the seams. The trade with an open top is that it needs a bit more thought about where it sits. Put it up on a block or hang it at back height for the birds, well away from a perch or anything they can get above, and most of the fouling problem goes away. Left flat on the litter it will collect bedding, which is true of any feeder but more obviously true of this one. Run it down rather than topping it up. Feed that sits in the bottom of a feeder for weeks goes stale and cakes, and the only way to know is to let it empty properly every so often and look.
