Some flocks will not settle to a covered feeder, and some keepers would simply rather see the feed level at a glance than lift a lid every morning. An open-top feeder is the simple answer to both. You can tell from the doorway whether it needs filling. It holds around 5 kg (11 lb) of pellets or crumble. The open pattern lets several birds eat at the same time, which matters more than people expect in a flock with a firm pecking order. A feeder with one narrow access point means the bottom birds eat last and eat less. The trade-off is exposure. Sited under cover and raised off the litter, an open feeder works well for years. Left out in the weather it will collect rain. If you can hang it so it swings slightly, birds will not stand in it either. Tip it out and wipe it down whenever the bottom layer starts to look packed down. Feed compacted into the base of a feeder is the part that goes off first.
