Details
Carrying water is the chore that decides how big a drinker you buy. Too small and you are making the trip three times. Too big and you cannot lift it once it is full. Just under 11 L (2.9 US gallons) sits about where most people can still manage a walk from the tap to the coop in one go. It comes as two pieces: a translucent jug with a moulded plastic carry handle on top, and a separate open base pan that the jug seats into, roughly 40 cm (15.75 in) across. Water sits in the shallow ring of the pan where birds can reach it, and the jug feeds it down as the level drops. The open pan is easier to clean than any enclosed drinker, which matters more than it sounds like it should. A drinker gets dirty daily, and one that takes two minutes to rinse actually gets rinsed. The translucent jug lets you see the level without lifting anything. Set it on something firm and level, and slightly raised if your floor is deep bedding, so shavings do not get scratched into the pan. In freezing weather bring it in overnight rather than leaving ice to sit in the base.
