A drinker you can carry full is a drinker that gets changed. The moment refilling means dragging a hose out to the coop or making two trips with a pail, water changes start happening every second day instead of every day. At 1.5 gallons, about 5.7 litres, this one fills at the tap and walks out to the pen in one hand. The plastic handle is the part that matters at this size. It does not go cold, it does not cut into your fingers the way a thin wire bail does, and there is no plated steel to rust through where it pivots. This capacity suits a brooder, a small backyard flock or a grow-out pen. It also earns its keep as a spare: something to swap in when the main drinker comes out for a proper scrub, so the birds are never standing without water while you work. Set it up on a block so scratched bedding does not end up in it, tip and rinse it daily in warm weather, and run a brush around the trough once a week. Open nest drinkers are easy to clean, which is most of the argument for them.
