Most backyard flocks are over-equipped at the feeder. A hopper sized for fifty birds means feed sitting for weeks going stale and drawing rodents. Around 3.2 kg (7 lb) is a sensible amount for a small flock, a few days' worth, turned over often. It measures about 30 cm (11.8 in) across the base pan. The build is the same as the larger sizes: a translucent hopper feeding down into a coloured pan with moulded dividers, a conical cover over the top, and a wire hook through the apex to hang it from a rafter, a chain or a length of baling wire. The cover is the feature worth paying attention to. Without one, birds roost on the hopper and everything that follows from roosting ends up in the feed. With it, the top is a slope nothing can perch on. Hanging beats standing at this size, because the height is adjustable and the floor stays clear for sweeping. If you would rather set it down, put it on a block or an overturned tub so the lip clears the bedding.
