Going away for a weekend is the test of a feeding setup. A trough that needs filling twice a day fails it. A gravity feeder holding 8.2 kg (18 lb) under a lid does not, and that is the main reason to hang one rather than set out pans. The feeder is roughly 43 cm (17 in) across and 36 cm (14 in) tall. A translucent hopper sits into a coloured base pan with moulded dividers around the rim, and a fitted conical cover keeps birds off the top and rain out of the feed. It hangs from a wire hook through the apex, which is the part that makes it work: off the floor, feed stays out of the litter, and you can set the height so birds reach in without billing it out. Hang it so the lip of the pan sits level with the back of a standing bird. Too low and they scratch feed out. Too high and the smallest ones cannot reach. It takes a minute to get right and it is worth the minute. Being translucent, the hopper shows the feed level from across the coop, which saves lifting the lid. Take it down and rinse it periodically, particularly the dividers in the base pan where fines collect.
