Feed on the floor is feed you are buying for the rats. Birds scratch it out, walk through it and roost above it, and a coop with a floor feeder goes through noticeably more feed than it should. Hanging a feeder deals with both halves of that at once. This one takes about 5 kg (11 lb) of pellets or crumble and comes with a cover, which matters wherever a bird can get above the feeder. Hung so the lip sits at roughly back height for the flock, it stops the scratching-out almost entirely. Hang it from the roof structure rather than a wall bracket so it can swing a little. A feeder that moves when a bird lands on it does not get roosted on. Reset the height as the flock grows, and check it again a few weeks later. It is the one adjustment that decides how much feed ends up on the floor. Empty and dry it before any long gap between flocks. Feed left in a covered feeder through a damp month is feed you will be throwing out.
