Wasted feed is the running cost nobody budgets for. Between scratching, billing out and simple trampling, an open pan loses a meaningful share of what goes into it. A lidded trough with feed slots stops nearly all of that at the cost of nothing but remembering to lift the lid. Dimensions are about 50 cm long, 10 cm wide and 7 cm tall (19.7 by 3.9 by 2.8 in). Two rows of oval openings run down the lid, it latches at both ends, and anti-roost pegs along the top ridge keep birds from standing over the feed. Yellow shows dirt, which sounds like a drawback and is actually useful. A feeder that looks grubby gets washed. A dark one hides the same buildup for months. If you are the sort of person who cleans what they can see needs it, pick the light colour on purpose. Two shorter feeders beat one long one if your birds bully, since the flock can split between them. If you are running just the one, put it where a bird at either end has somewhere to go.
