Once a batch of birds is past the brooder they eat faster than a small feeder can keep up with, and refilling four times a day is nobody's idea of a good system. A longer trough holds more and spreads the flock out along it. The 20 inch size measures roughly 50 by 10 by 7 cm (19.7 by 3.9 by 2.8 in). The top is a separate piece pierced with two rows of oval feed holes, clipping down at each end so it stays on when a bird lands on it, with moulded pegs along the ridge to make landing there unattractive in the first place. Red is the colour most people default to for poultry equipment, which cuts both ways. Easy to find at any dealer, harder to tell apart from everyone else's if your birds go to a show or a shared grow-out barn. Marking the underside with a paint pen takes ten seconds. The low profile is the point. It sits flat on the floor, so birds do not have to reach up and feed does not spill over a lip. Keep it on a packed floor rather than deep loose shavings, where it will list to one side and dump.
