Details
For the first weeks after chicks arrive, feed spread on the floor of a brooder is feed in the bedding within the hour. A ground feeder with holes around the perimeter gives each bird somewhere to put its head and nothing else. They cannot stand in it and they cannot scratch a pile out over the side. This is the 12 inch size, about 30 cm across, moulded in plastic with the feeding holes formed around the top. Being plastic rather than galvanised, it washes properly and it will not go rusty in a damp brooder, which is where a lot of ground feeders quietly end their lives. It sits flat on the litter and needs nothing to hold it down once there is feed in it. Yellow stands out against shavings, so it is easy to find when the birds are crowded on top of it and easy to check at a glance to see whether it wants topping up.
