Chicks in a brooder waste an astonishing proportion of what you put in front of them. Most of it goes because the feed is in something open they can stand in. A covered trough with slots along the top cuts that down for the simple reason that a bird can only reach what is directly under its head. At about 30 cm long, 10 cm wide and 7 cm tall (11.8 by 3.9 by 2.8 in), it takes very little floor in a brooder box or a small coop. Two rows of oval feed openings run the length of the lid, which latches at both ends, and there are anti-roost pegs moulded along the top ridge. Red is the traditional colour for poultry gear and there is a reason it stuck. It stands out against bedding, so an empty feeder is obvious from the doorway rather than something you find on the second walk-through. Give it a wipe out between batches of birds. Plastic this smooth does not hold much, but damp feed left in a corner turns to a hard crust that is far easier to deal with the day it happens than a month later.
