Feed thrown on the coop floor gets walked through, scratched into the bedding and fouled within the hour. A low trough with a slotted top solves most of that, because birds put their heads in to eat and cannot stand in it or scratch it out. This is the shorter of the two common lengths, roughly 30 cm long by 10 cm wide and 7 cm tall (11.8 by 3.9 by 2.8 in). The lid is pierced with two rows of oval openings and clips down at each end, and there are moulded pegs along the ridge that discourage birds from perching over the feed. Purple is not a colour anyone needs, but it is a colour nobody else in the coop yard has, which makes it easy to keep track of whose feeder is whose if you share equipment or run birds at more than one site. It sits directly on the ground, so it wants a flat floor rather than loose deep bedding where it will sink and tip. Pop the lid off to fill and to wash, and the trough is shallow enough that a brush reaches every corner.
