Feed thrown on the litter is feed you have paid for and will not get back. Some of it gets scratched into the bedding, some gets walked through, and none of it stays clean. A shallow feeder at ground level keeps the ration in one place where you can see how much has actually gone. This is the 12 inch size, roughly 30 cm across, moulded in plastic rather than galvanised steel. Plastic will not rust out from the bottom the way a metal ground feeder does when it sits on damp bedding all winter, and it does not go painfully cold to handle in an unheated shed. Ground level is the right height for chicks and smaller birds that cannot use a hanging feeder yet, and it works as a transition unit for a batch moving out of the brooder. The lime green is easy to find in a dim shed and easy to see at a glance from the doorway when you are checking whether it needs topping up. Lift it, tip the fines out and give it a wipe every day or two. A feeder at floor level collects bedding no matter what you do, and the fix is a quick habit rather than a clever design.
