Scooping out of a deep bin with a coffee can gets old fast. A proper scoop with a square mouth sits flat on the bottom of a barrel and comes up full, which is the difference between two dips and six. This one is a square-mouthed open scoop measuring roughly 33 cm (13 in) across the opening and about 15 cm (6 in) front to back, moulded in one piece from recycled polyethylene. Open-topped means you can see what you have and dump it cleanly over the lip, with no enclosed hood to trap dust or hold moisture. Green is one of five colours the scoop comes in, and that is worth using deliberately. Keeping one scoop per bin, green in the oats and something else in the mineral, stops cross-contamination without anyone having to think about it. Plastic is the right material here for the simple reason that it will not rust or dent, and it does not clatter. Rinse it if it has been in anything damp or molassed, and stand it up to drain rather than leaving it face down in the bin.
