Measuring feed with an old coffee can is how rations quietly drift. An open round scoop of a known size gives you something repeatable, and the open top means you can see what you have got rather than guessing at a heaped cup. This is the five-quart size, roughly 4.7 L brimful, moulded from recycled low-density polyethylene with the handle formed as part of the body. The round bowl is the right shape for getting down into the corner of a barrel: a square scoop bridges on the curve, a round one follows it. Green is a common choice for the general grain scoop, leaving other colours for mineral and supplements. Keep one scoop per bin and leave it in the bin rather than carrying it around the barn. It is the simplest way to stop damp feed being carried from one product into the next.
