Tuff Stuff Nest Eggs
A pair of ceramic dummy eggs to leave in the nest box so hens settle on laying where you want them to.
Details
Pullets coming into lay will pick a spot and commit to it, and if that spot is under the feed bin or behind a straw bale you will be hunting eggs all summer. A dummy egg sitting in the nest box is the oldest trick for steering that decision, and it still works. These are ceramic rather than plastic or wood, sold two to a card. Ceramic has the right weight and the right cool, smooth feel, and it does not scuff or go brittle the way a hollow plastic egg does after a season in a dusty box. Put one in each box you actually want used, and leave the rest of the boxes empty or blocked until the habit sets. Once the flock is laying reliably you can take them out or leave them, and most people leave them. They wash. Wipe them down when you clean out the boxes, the same as you would anything else in there, and they will still be on the job several flocks from now.
