Every barn has one bucket that walks. It gets carried to the far end of the run, set down behind a round bale and forgotten until the morning someone actually needs it. Orange is a poor colour for hiding, which is rather the point: against dirt, straw, snow or a dark shed wall it stays visible. The body measures roughly 53 cm across and 41 cm deep (21 by 16 inches) and holds 70 quarts, about 66 litres. That is a full stall pick for most horses, or a load of feed, gravel or windfall apples. It is moulded from recycled low-density polyethylene, which is the material doing the real work here, since it flexes rather than cracks when it goes over on a frozen morning. Two moulded side handles mean two people can take it when it is heavy, or one person can swing it up into a truck box. Empties nest inside one another, so a stack of them takes up about one bucket of floor space over the winter.
