Every yard accumulates cracked tubs. The ones that fail are usually rigid plastic that has gone brittle in a January cold snap and split the first time somebody kicked it across the alley. Low-density polyethylene behaves differently, giving instead of shattering. The tub holds 66 L (70 quarts) and stands about 41 cm (16 in) tall on a 53 cm (21 in) opening. Rope handles run through moulded lugs on either side, so it can be carried one-handed when it is light or shared between two people when it is full of wet shavings. Burgundy is dark enough to hide staining, which is worth something on a tub that spends its life holding soaked beet pulp, molasses buckets or whatever came out of the last stall. It also reads as distinct at a glance from the reds and oranges, if you are running a colour system. Rinse it out before it freezes and it will keep its shape for years. The rope handles are the wear point, and they are simple enough to replace with a length of poly rope and two figure-eight knots if one ever lets go.
