Anywhere more than one animal is fed by hand, somebody eventually gets the wrong feed into the wrong pen. Colour is the cheapest fix there is. A purple feeder belongs to one animal, and once the barn learns that, nobody has to read a label in poor light or ask twice. Capacity is about 5.7 L (6 quarts), which is a sensible measure for a supplement or a single small ration rather than a full pail. It hooks over a rail, panel or gate, and lifts straight off again when the feed is gone. Because it comes off the fence, it actually gets washed. Feeders that stay hung all season collect rain, chaff and whatever blows in on a windy afternoon. A feeder that comes down after every feed dries out and stays sweet. Purple is also one of the easier colours to pick out in a shed full of black rubber and galvanised steel.
