Reservoirs are the part that goes. A jug gets dropped on a frozen coop floor, or left with water in it through a hard freeze, and the base outlasts it easily. Rather than replacing the whole drinker, you replace the jug. It's worth keeping a spare on the shelf if you run poultry through a prairie winter. Freezing is the main killer of plastic drinker reservoirs, and it always happens on the coldest morning of the year, when nobody wants to drive to town. A spare jug means you fill it, set it on the base you already have, and get on with chores. The other reason people buy a second one is rotation. With two jugs you can bring one in to thaw and wash while the other is in service, which is a lot less painful than chipping ice out of the only one you own. Check that it matches the gallon drinker base you're running before you buy — drinker jugs and bases are not universal across brands or sizes.
