There are two reasons to use one of these, and the second gets overlooked. The obvious use is boredom — stall rest, storm days, a horse in for the winter with nothing to think about. The less obvious one is slowing down a horse that inhales its feed. A ball that releases a few pellets at a time turns a two-minute meal into a twenty-minute one. It's a ten-inch ball you load with the horse's own ration. They roll it, feed comes out, they roll it again. Simple enough that most horses work it out in a session or two. Purple is a good pick if you've got more than one horse using treat balls and want to keep them straight — each horse gets a colour, and nobody ends up feeding the easy keeper twice. Use it on footing where it will actually roll; deep bedding stalls it out and the horse gives up. Take it away if a horse starts guarding it, and check the inside for caked feed now and then, particularly in humid weather.
