A basket fork does the opposite job to a standard barn fork. The tines sit close together and curve up into a basket, so fine material stays on rather than falling through. If you bed on sawdust, fine shavings or pellet bedding, this is the fork you actually need — a wide-tined fork just pushes that stuff around. The head runs about sixteen and a half inches wide by ten deep, on a fork around fifty-four inches overall. It's a little bigger in every dimension than the square barn fork, which is the point: a basket that holds more per lift. Blue is the standard colour and the one most people reach for when they're replacing a worn fork rather than starting a colour system. It's also the right tool for picking a paddock, cleaning up spilled grain, or scooping out a shelter floor. What it isn't is a digging fork. Levering under anything frozen will break tines, and closely set plastic tines break sooner than widely spaced ones. Hang it up and keep it on loose material.
