Purple gets picked in shared barns for the obvious reason, but there's a second one: it's the colour least likely to already be on the wall, so it makes a clean marker for a specific job. Plenty of outfits keep one fork strictly for the sick pen or the quarantine stall, and colour is how they remember which. The fork itself is the square-head pattern — head around fifteen and a half inches across by eight deep, total length a bit over four feet, with tine spacing wide enough to let bedding fall through while manure stays put. That sifting action is the difference between cleaning a stall and rebedding it. It's noticeably lighter than a steel manure fork, which you feel on the tenth stall rather than the first. Hang it up when you're done — tines left under load, especially in cold, are tines that take a set. For anything frozen or packed hard, reach for steel. Plastic forks are for loose material, and used that way they last a long time.
