Tine spacing is the whole reason to choose a square fork over a basket. The gaps let shavings and loose straw fall through while the manure rides on top, so you're not carrying half a bale to the pile every time you clean a stall. Over a winter of daily mucking that adds up to a lot of bedding you didn't have to buy. The head is about fifteen and a half inches wide by eight deep, on a fork a little over four feet long. That's enough bite to make progress without loading the fork so heavy you can't lift it out of a corner. Green is a good code for the outdoor fork — the one that lives by the pen gate rather than in the aisle. If it stays outside, hang it under cover; plastic tines that spend a summer in the sun and then a winter frozen do eventually get tired. Use it for what it's for: loose bedding, manure, straw, spilled hay. Frozen packs and gravel are a job for steel, no matter which fork you own.
