Twenty-five gallons is the size most people settle on. It holds enough water that you're not out with a pail three times a day, and it's still light enough — empty — that one person can tip it, drag it out of a pen, scrub it and put it back without help. Go much bigger and cleaning becomes a two-person job. At roughly twenty-eight inches across and thirteen deep, it suits a horse or two, a few head in a small pen, or a goat pen. It also works as a soaking tub for hay cubes, a wash tub, a tack-cleaning tub, or storage for anything you want up off the ground. Poly has one big advantage in this climate: it flexes. Water freezes and expands, the wall gives instead of splitting, and the ice comes out when you tip and flex the tub rather than needing an axe. No rust, no rot, no seams. Set it on level ground and it'll still be here in ten years.
