Set a shovel down beside a feed bin in November and come back for it in December. A dark handle in a snowbank is gone; a red one is still visible. That is the honest reason to pick this colour, and anyone who has bought the same shovel twice knows it. The blade is heavy-duty plastic, which is the standard for feed handling now. It's a fraction of the weight of a steel scoop for the same load, it won't rust after a season in a damp feed room, and it won't throw a spark in a granary full of dust. It also won't score the inside of a poly bin or tank when you're scraping out the last of a load. It moves grain, pellets, chop, mineral, shavings and snow without complaint. It is not a digging tool — driving it into frozen ground or under a packed manure pack is how these break. Use it as the scoop it is and it'll outlast several steel ones that rusted out in the corner.
