On a yard where more than one family or more than one operation shares a shop, tools migrate. A purple shovel is a shovel with a name on it, and it saves the conversation about whose it is. Under the colour it's a straightforward heavy-duty plastic scoop. Plastic buys you three things over steel: it's much lighter for the same load, it won't rust in a damp feed room or a wet mud room, and it won't strike a spark in a granary or a dusty bin — which is why grain handling has moved to plastic scoops almost everywhere. Grain, pellets, chop, mineral, shavings, spilled bedding, snow off the step: all fair game. Frozen manure, gravel and anything you have to lever is not — that's what the steel one on the wall is for. It also won't scratch the inside of a poly tank or a plastic-lined bin, so it's the right tool for cleaning out feed storage without leaving score marks for feed to pack into.
