A plastic blade has a bit of give to it, which is why it works well on bedding. It rides over rubber mats and rough concrete instead of catching and jarring your wrists, and it doesn't chew up the mat surface the way a steel edge does. For clearing shavings out of a stall or moving straw around, that matters. Green is the colour a lot of people keep for the bedding shovel, on the sensible principle that the tool you use in the stalls should not be the tool you use in the feed bin. Beyond bedding it does everything a scoop should: grain out of a bin, pellets into a pail, mineral into a tub, snow off a trailer ramp or a deck. It won't rust in a damp barn and it won't throw a spark in a granary. What it won't do is dig. Keep it out of frozen manure packs and gravel and it'll last for years; use it as a pry bar and it won't.
