Feeding space per bird is the number that actually matters with trough feeders. Birds low in the pecking order get pushed off a short feeder and end up uneven in weight and condition. Fifteen inches gives you a bit more room along the rail than the twelve, which usually translates into fewer birds standing around waiting. Hanging it on the rail rather than the floor is the point. Feed at rail height stays out of the bedding, out of the droppings, and out of reach of birds standing in it. It also keeps the trough out from underfoot when you're in the pen with a pail. Galvanized steel gives you a trough you can scrub with hot water between batches without it staining or going soft, and one that won't crack the first cold morning something bumps into it. Mice will chew plastic; they won't chew this. It's a sensible middle length — long enough for a working pen, short enough that it still fits most standard cage and hutch fronts.
