Twenty-seven pounds is roughly half a sack, which lines up neatly with how feed actually gets bought and stored — tip half a bag in, close the bag, and there's no awkward remainder sitting open. The handle means it fills at the bin and travels to the coop full, rather than you carrying loose grain in a pail past the birds. Galvanized steel is what makes it last: it doesn't crack in a cold barn, doesn't warp in summer heat, and gives rodents nothing to chew through. In an older barn or a granary, that is not the small consideration it sounds like. Hang it rather than standing it. Feed off the floor stays cleaner, birds can't roost on the rim and mess in it, and you can set the height so the lip sits about level with their backs — the setting that wastes the least feed. Empty and wipe it out occasionally; fines settle and cake in the bottom.
