Details
The handle is the feature worth paying for. A feeder without one has to be filled where it hangs, which means carrying a pail of grain into the coop and pouring it in with birds around your boots. With a handle you fill it at the bin, carry it out, and hook it on — one trip, no spilled feed on the floor for the mice. Twenty pounds suits a small flock. Galvanized steel holds up in a cold building where plastic gets brittle, and more to the point, mice and rats cannot chew into it. Anyone who has found a plastic feeder gnawed through at the base and a week's feed on the floor understands the difference. Hang it at about the back height of the birds. Too low and they bill feed out onto the floor; too high and the smaller ones can't reach. Hanging also stops them roosting on it and fouling the feed, which is the main reason feeders get hung rather than stood on the ground.
