Two and a half gallons is the size for a working flock rather than a brooder. It cuts down the number of trips out with a pail, which is worth something on a January morning when the pail handle is trying to freeze to your glove on the way. Galvanized steel is why people keep buying metal drinkers instead of plastic. It won't crack when it gets knocked over on frozen ground, it won't go chalky and brittle after two summers of sun, and it scrubs out properly — you can take a brush and hot water to it without scratching a permanent film into the surface. Metal is also what most heated poultry bases are built to work with; check the base instructions, but a steel drinker on a heated stand is the standard way people get through a prairie winter without hauling water twice a day. Set it on a block or a low stand rather than the bedding. Off the floor means less litter in the water and a dry spot underneath.
