The small one is the brooder drinker. Two and a half quarts is about right for a batch of day-old chicks, and there is a real argument for going small: a drinker you dump, scrub and refill every morning stays clean, and a small one you will actually do it with. A big drinker in a brooder just means dirty water sitting longer. The folding legs are the useful part. They hold the drinking lip above the shavings so chicks are not scratching litter and droppings straight into their own water, and they fold flat when the brooder comes down so the thing stores on a shelf instead of rolling around the feed room. It's light enough to carry out full in one hand without slopping it. It also makes a handy spare — most people who run birds through a season end up wanting a second drinker so one can be washed and drying while the other is in the pen. Keep it out of hard freezing; plastic and ice don't negotiate.
