Five gallons in a bucket shaped to hang. That is the short version. The flat side is what separates it from a standard round pail, and it is the reason flat backs are what you see in stalls and on corral panels. Weight is the argument. Twenty quarts of water is roughly forty pounds hanging off a single point, and a round bucket carrying that will rock, swing and eventually pull off whatever you hung it on. Flat against the wall the load sits where it should and stays put. Purple is not a common colour around a yard, which is exactly why it is useful. If you need one pail that is never used for anything but water, or one that only ever holds a treatment or a supplement, an unmistakable colour is the simplest way to enforce that. Nobody has to read a label or remember a rule, they just grab the purple one. Store it upside down and it stays clean and dry.
