Details
A five-gallon flat back covers a lot of ground. It hangs as a stall water bucket for a big drinker, it works as a soaking pail for cubes or beet pulp, and it carries a decent load of grain out to the pen. Fifteen inches across the top is a genuinely useful dimension. You can get both hands and a brush into it, you can pour out of it without slopping down your leg, and a horse can drink from it without hitting the sides. Compared with a narrow five-gallon pail, everything about it is easier to work with. Green is easy to live with. If this pail is going to live outside through winter, remember it will freeze into a single block. A pail with some flex in the walls is more forgiving about that than a rigid one, but the habit of dumping it before it freezes is still what saves you the time.
