A five-gallon flat back covers a lot of ground. It hangs as a stall water bucket for a big drinker, it works as a soaking pail for cubes or beet pulp, and it carries a decent load of grain out to the pen. Fifteen inches across the top is a genuinely useful dimension. You can get both hands and a brush into it, you can pour out of it without slopping down your leg, and a horse can drink from it without hitting the sides. Compared with a narrow five-gallon pail, everything about it is easier to work with. Green is easy to live with. It does not show water marks and mineral scale the way a pale bucket does, and it is a colour most people are happy to look at in a tidy barn. If this pail is going to live outside through winter, remember it will freeze into a single block. A pail with some flex in the walls is more forgiving about that than a rigid one, but the habit of dumping it before it freezes is still what saves you the time.
