Orange is worth choosing deliberately. Against snow, mud and a brown winter pasture it stays visible, and in a dim barn it is the bucket you can find without turning a light on. Underneath the colour it is a plain two-gallon flat back. The flat side lets it hang tight to a wall, a panel or a corral rail without swinging, which is the whole reason this shape exists. Nothing gets in behind it, nothing rocks it off its hanger, and it stays where you put it when an animal shoves at it. At about eleven inches across the top it is wide enough to get a hand and a brush right to the bottom. That matters, because the bottom of a water bucket is where the trouble starts. In cold weather a bucket you can dump and flip quickly saves you a lot of ice chipping, and a bucket you can actually scrub is one an animal will keep drinking from.
