Details
Two gallons is the classic stall bucket size. Enough water that a horse is not out overnight, small enough that you can carry two of them and still get a door open. The flat back matters more than it sounds. On a round bucket a horse can swing it, rub on it and get a shoe or a halter clip behind it. A flat back sits tight to the wall or the panel and gives nothing to catch on, which is why flat backs are standard in stalls and round pails are not. Colour is the easy way to run a barn. Blue for water, something else for feed, and nobody puts grain in the water bucket by accident. It also makes it obvious which bucket belongs where when several are hanging in a row. Scrub them out regularly. A bucket that gets slimy at the waterline is one a fussy horse will drink less from, and through the cold months they are already drinking less than you would like.
