A stirrer is one of those things you do not think about until you are elbow deep in a pail of beet pulp trying to work a supplement through it with a stick you picked up off the ground. Plastic is the right choice for this job. It does not corrode around salt, mineral and medicated powders, it rinses clean under a tap instead of holding feed in a grain, and it is stiff enough to work through a thick mash without folding over. The length keeps your hand clear of the feed, which you notice when the feed is wet and it is cold enough that you do not want a soaked sleeve. Where it earns its keep is anything that has to be evenly distributed. Supplements and medications only do their job if the animal gets the whole dose, and powder sitting on top of a soaked feed gets left in the bottom of the pan. Stir it through properly and it goes down with the feed. Rinse it off after each use and hang it up with the scoops.
